Student work, judged by industry
Students in the Graphic & Web Design program enter their work in the American Advertising Awards, where it is judged by working designers and agency staff from outside the college. Students here have won 24 ADDYs since 2020, all of them through AAF Spokane. One of them, Gracie Duncan’s Bear Rabbit Taproom, took Best in Show. The judging is run by AAF Spokane, and the college has no part in it.
Cobalt is awarded beside Best in Show, Gold, Silver and Bronze rather than below them.
Every award on record, newest first. Each one is shown on the winner card the competition made for it, so the piece is the first thing you see.

Each name has a profile with the rest of their work on it. The number is how many awards they won. 5 of the 24 were entered without a named designer on record, so they are not counted here.
The awards above come from competitions the program enters deliberately. Here is what they are and why we put student work into them.
AAF Spokane
Usually just called the ADDYs.
The American Advertising Awards, still widely called the ADDYs, are the American Advertising Federation's annual competition for advertising and design work. It is judged in three tiers. Entries are first judged by a local AAF club, work that wins there advances to one of the federation's district competitions, and district winners advance to the national show.
AAF Spokane runs the local tier for the Inland Northwest, so that is where North Idaho College entries are judged. Entries are scored by a panel of creative professionals, and student work is judged in its own division of the same show the region's agencies enter.
Why we enter
Our students enter the same regional show as the agencies and in-house teams they will be applying to. The judges are working professionals from outside the college. They have not met the students, they are not grading a class, and they score the work on what it is.
That outside read is the reason we take part. It tells a student where their work stands in the market they are about to enter, and a win gives them something real to put in a portfolio and talk about in an interview. Getting an entry ready teaches the rest of the job too: picking your strongest piece, writing about it so a stranger understands it, and hitting a deadline you did not set.
How it is ranked
An honour awarded outside that order, such as a chapter’s own student prize, sits beside the ladder rather than below it.
Most of these pieces started as class assignments. The full set of student work and the portfolio show archive are both here.
