Action24
Action24 was the 2024 NIC Graphic and Web Design portfolio show, set for the evening of May 3, 2024, from 5 to 8 pm in McLain Hall on the Coeur d'Alene campus, where thirteen graduating designers put their graphic design, web design and interactive video work in front of the public. The identity runs on a secret-agent briefing: the site opens with "Your mission, should you choose to accept it…", counts down to the doors, and files every graduate under "Special Agent". The wordmark answers with the designers' own tools instead, a mouse cursor launching out of the type and a pen nib finishing the 4.
Action24 represents the graduating cohort of 2024 and the work they developed together during their time in the program.

The Concept
Why “Action24”?
The site never explains the name. It performs it instead. "24" is the year, printed in every page title, and "Action" is the register the whole thing is written in. From the hero line down, the labels are lifted from a briefing: the event block is "Your Mission Details", the invitation opens "Agents of Artistry, assemble!", McLain Hall becomes "our secret headquarters", the class is "The NIC Agents of Design", and each graduate page files its subject under "Special Agent:", with "Agent Background" for the bio, "Field Experience" for the credits and "Successful Missions" for the portfolio grid. A live clock on the homepage counted down to 5 pm on May 3 and then swapped itself for "The countdown is over!".
The artwork does not follow the copy into the spy film. There are no crosshairs, silhouettes, dossiers or fingerprints anywhere in the identity. What the mark puts in motion is the designers' own equipment, a mouse cursor launching up and to the right out of the wordmark and a pen nib on the tail of the 4, so "action" reads as work moving rather than as espionage. The show is named in running prose exactly once, on each graduate page: "View more of <name>'s work at Action 24 on May 3rd!", written there with a space while the logo sets it solid.
Show Identity
The Brand Behind Action24
The site is dark all the way down, and the stylesheet declares six colors and uses nothing else: near-black #231F20 for the page, red #981A13 for the countdown pill, the video band, the graduate cards and the contact band, blue #005F85 for the mission details and the faculty and ADDY bands, a pale red #dc8884 held back for hover states, a light blue #2c96c0, and white for every line of text. The favicon samples the same pair out of the artwork, a #981c1f cursor on #221e1f stars. Two self-hosted webfonts carry the typography, no Google Fonts and no CDN. HemiHead, a wide squared face leaning forward, sets every display line from the hero down to the names on the graduate cards. Helvetica Neue takes the body copy and the navigation, very often italic, which keeps the speed cue running at small sizes.
The wordmark sets Action24 solid in that same slanted face and hides two tools inside it: four-point sparkles burst above the i, a mouse cursor arrow rises up and to the right out of the join between "Action" and "24", and the last stroke of the 4 tapers into a pen nib. "NIC Student Design Portfolio Show" locks up beneath in bold italic. The cursor and stars lift out as a standalone mark in two colorways, a red arrow with near-black stars for the favicon and a near-black arrow with white stars for use large on dark ground. Both the wordmark and the icon exist only as knockout artwork on transparency, so the identity has no dark or full-color lockup. The page itself is built as color-blocked bands that alternate down the screen: black hero over a full-bleed background photograph, blue mission details, red video band, black graduate grid three cards across, red contact band, white sponsor strip, black footer. A red-to-white gradient rule sits under the navigation on every page, and the buttons sweep that same gradient across on hover.
